Hope at last as CORD MP begins drafting Bill to reduce Counties from 47 to 18 as well as MPs - do you support the move?

Mwingi Central Member of
Parliament Joe Mutambu has
begun drafting a new
Constitutional Amendment Bill
that seeks to reduce the number of
counties as well as Members of
Parliament due to an untenable
Wage Bill.
This followed the recent
countrywide protests by members
of the public over the new levies
introduced by County
Governments as they struggle to
meet their financial obligations.
If passed by the National
Assembly and subsequently
endorsed through a national
referendum, the Bill will reduce
the number of counties from the
current 47 to 18 where majority of
them will have to merge.
Speaking yesterday, Mutambu
noted that the Bill will also reduce
the number of MPs both from the
National Assembly and the Senate
as well as County Assemblies and
Constitutional offices.
The MPs would be reduced from
the record 349 to 180 while
Senators will only be 18 without
nominated ones.
He said the move will help contain
the public Wage Bill and reduce
the tax burden in the counties.
Do you support the move to reduce
counties to 18?
