We passed the Media Bill to get rid of JICHO PEVU series by MOHAMED ALI/ JOHN ALLAN NAMU - TNA MP

Friday November 1, 2013 - A senior TNA MP has said they passed the draconian Media Bill on Thursday, in order to get rid of journalists who earn their living by spreading propaganda and instilling fear among Kenyans.

Speaking outside Parliament buildings after the passage of the Bill that will see harsh penalties imposed against journalists who peddle hearsay and rumours in mainstream media, the MP said KTN’s investigative journalists Mohammed Ali of the Jicho Pevu ragtag and John Allan Namu of Inside Story  are among  journalists targeted by the Bill.

The two, he said, have been peddling lies and contorted truths and also showing photos of dead people which is against the media code of ethics.

The lawmaker cited a recent terror attack at Westage Shopping Mall where he said that the two aired clips of dead people which instilled fear to the public and it’s against the media code of ethics.

If President Uhuru Kenyatta signs the Bill into law, the Government will have power to kick journalists out of the media and raid to the accounts of media houses and journalists who breach media code of conduct.
