Kenyan assistant referee Aden Marwa has been picked by Confederation of African Football (CAF) as the second assistant referee for this weekend’s African Champions League final second leg match pitting Egyptian giants Al-Ahly against South African-side Orlando Pirates in Cairo.
The assignment is set to add a feather in Marwa’s soaring career after his first major senior international assignment at the 2012 Gabon/Equatorial Guinea Africa Cup of Nations finals as well as the African Cup of Nations finals held in South Africa earlier this year.
WORLD CUP DUTY
Besides the milestones, Marwa, a primary school teacher by profession, has been shortlisted by FIFA for the 2014 Brazil World Cup finals and early last year, attended a seminar in Switzerland organised by the world soccer governing body for the World Cup bound referees and their assistants.
In the second leg of the Champions League, he will be assisting centre referee Gassama Papa from Gambia, and first assistant Ogbamariam Angeson from Eritrea.
The Kenyan whistle blower is currently officiating in the FIFA Under 20 World Cup finals being held in the United Arab Emirates.
The Kuria-born soccer referee is also categorised in the CAF Elite A Class and has also officiated in the FIFA World Cup continental preliminaries played so far.
Meanwhile, other local referees Denis Omweno, Peter Sabaitia and Mary Anne Njoroge are attending the CAF Elite B referees course currently ongoing in Cairo where 45 male and 12 female referees and assistants from across the continent are taking part in the one week course that ends on Thursday November 7.
The forum has been organised by CAF for match officials who will take part in the CHAN and Africa Women Championships scheduled for next year.
Elsewhere, assistant women referee Jane Cherono travels to South Africa this weekend to officiate in the Africa Women Championships qualifier pitting South Africa against Botswana.
