Should RAILA ODINGA be compensated? – Court awards 55 million compensation to 10 ex-soldiers over the 1982 coup.

The High has awarded sh55 million compensation to 10 ex-soldiers from Kenya Air Force for the torture they underwent after the failed 1982 attempted coup.

In his ruling, Justice Isaac Lenaola, ordered Uhuru/ Ruto’s Government to give each of the 10 ex-soldiers sh5.5 million compensation after they were detained for eight months without trial between 1982 and 1983.

“It is clear to my mind that holding of petitioners for 8 months without charge and not being arraigned in court was unlawful and a clear violation of Section72 (3) (b) of the repealed constitution”, said Justice Lenaola.

The ex-soldiers told the court that immediately after their arrests, they were stripped naked and were made to walk on knees on the concrete floor, whipped and kicked around in public glare – a treatment that was very demeaning.

This is the same suffering and treatment that former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, went through during his arrest and while in detention over the same 1982 coup attempt, where he was also detained without charge.

Should Raila Odinga also now be compensated for illegal detention and torture over the 1982 attempted coup?
